Memorial Day is upon us! For most, that means a long weekend spending precious time with friends and family, lighting up the grill – it is the kickoff to summer, after all!
While barbecuing, sailing, and other fun outdoor festivities might be on our agenda for Memorial Day, we must not forget the fallen soldiers that risked their lives to give us the freedom we have today.
Memorial Day was created to honor and remember all those who gave their lives for our freedom, and was inspired by the 500,000 deaths of soldiers in the Civil War.
Remembrance for Memorial Day Soldiers
While the Civil War never quite made it up to Maine, there are several former military forts along the waterfront in Casco Bay, one of them being the popular Fort Gorges, just off the East End in Portland. Built from 1858 to 1864, no battles were fought there and no troops were stationed there. Advancing military technology, including iron clad ships and long range guns, made the fort obsolete before it could be used. The fort is now a park, accessible only by boat. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
